Reimagining Dance:
A Screendance-making Workshop
Conducted by Mitchell Rose
Who does it
Mitchell Rose has created 40 films that have won 100+ festival awards and are distributed around the world. His film Learn to Speak Body has over 3 million views online. Exquisite Corps has over a million views and created a genre which is now replicated broadly. The Brooklyn Academy of Music commissioned him to make a sequel, And So Say All of Us.
He was a professor of dance-film at The Ohio State University from which he recently retired.
Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Mitchell was a choreographer with a New York-based dance company. For 12 years, they toured throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
The New York Times called him: “A rare and wonderful talent.” The Washington Post wrote that his work is “in the tradition of Chaplin, Keaton, and Tati.”
He then decided to migrate from dance to film and became a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute in L.A. For 10 years he made films and wrote screenplays in Hollywood. But eventually was lured back to his ex: dance. Synthesizing these two loves, he found his favorite artistic place.
Coming to screendance as a filmmaker with a foundation in dance, he is uniquely situated to offer a perspective—and learning experience—unlike any other screendance workshop.
